The evil pillow! Is it on your bed?

We spend on average, 8 years of our lives asleep.

We also tend to hold on to pillows like there is a high level of sentiment to them. I personally had a pillow that I kept since I was a very young child well into my 30’s. It was a down pillow that was a combination of 2 different down pillows that I had accumulated over the years. It was soft, big and fluffy, and dangerous tool in a pillow fight. I found myself doing as every down pillow sleeping patient admitted to doing; waking up in the middle of the night, multiple times, to “fluff” the pillow and form it into the design that was necessary for support. I also noticed that I was waking up with a sore neck on a very regular occasion.
I’m not even sure I want to bring this up, but if you think about it, pillows collect all of the dead skin, hair follicles, tears, eye gunk, pollen, and microbes that are apart of our lives every night. We breathe our nasty breath as well as drool on our precious pillows that we refuse to give up. The longer that we keep a pillow, the more of this that we put our heads on every night. So if for nothing else, change your pillow every now and then. Gross!!

Anyway, back to the point. How embarrassing is it, being a chiropractor, even a neck specialist, and waking up with a sore neck? I almost felt hypocritical. It was at that point that I began my research into pillows. The key features that I found to be critical, were 1) It needs to keep your neck and head in the same position that you are standing erect. 2) It needs to be a design that allows for both side and back sleeping. 3) It must prevent stomach sleeping. It took me a while to finally find the pillow that I was looking for, but found exactly what I needed in the Therapeutica pillow. It took a break in period of a couple of nights, but it has since provided me with the best support for my neck, and I take it with me when I travel.

Because you spend 8 years of your life asleep, don’t you think that it is important to invest in something that is going to take care of you and your spine?
